MLB roundup: Giants walk off Braves on 2-out HR in 9th

Matt Chapman belted a two-run, walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday afternoon, lifting the San Francisco Giants to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Atlanta Braves.
After Braves starter Bryce Elder struck out a career-high 12 in eight innings while allowing one run, Atlanta turned to Pierce Johnson (1-3) for the ninth with a 2-1 lead. A one-out single by Heliot Ramos set the stage for Chapman, who launched a 1-1 pitch into the left field bleachers for his 12th home run of the season and the Giants’ second consecutive walk-off win.
Tyler Rogers (3-2) threw a scoreless top of the ninth for the Giants as the Braves’ losing streak reached six. Giants right-hander Logan Webb took a 1-0 lead and two-hit shutout into the fifth before Michael Harris II launched his fourth homer of the year. Webb struck out 10 over six innings, giving up two runs on six hits without a walk.
The Braves’ go-ahead run came in the sixth after Ronald Acuna Jr., Drake Baldwin and Austin Riley hit consecutive singles off Webb with no outs. Marcell Ozuna’s fielder’s choice grounder allowed Acuna to score. Elder reached eight full innings for just the second time in his career while throwing 107 pitches.
Orioles 7, Athletics 4
Ramon Laureano homered and had three hits and three RBIs and Colton Cowser launched a 455-foot homer to help Baltimore beat the host Athletics.
Gunnar Henderson reached base four times for the Orioles, who won for the seventh time in their past eight games. Henderson also had a fine defensive throw to save a run, while Cowser had two hits. Felix Bautista issued a walk to start the ninth before striking out the next three hitters for his 12th save.
Lawrence Butler and Jack Wilson each had two hits for the Athletics. Starter Luis Severino was charged with six runs (five earned) and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. The Athletics have lost 21 of their past 24 games.
Cubs 6, Tigers 1
Seiya Suzuki led a five-homer barrage with a pair of solo shots as the visiting Cubs powered past the Tigers.
Suzuki smacked his 15th and 16th homers in support of Jameson Taillon (6-3), who posted his fourth consecutive victory and fifth straight quality start. Taillon allowed one run and three hits with one walk and five strikeouts in seven innings.
Zach McKinstry had a triple and scored the lone run for Detroit. Keider Montero gave up four runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Rangers 5, Nationals 0
Jacob deGrom pitched seven strong innings, Marcus Semien had two hits and drove in three runs and Texas beat host Washington.
The 36-year-old deGrom (6-2) allowed two hits and didn’t walk a batter while striking out eight. He has allowed two runs or less in 10 consecutive starts and his ERA is 2.12. Semien singled home a run in the first and added a two-run double in the eighth for Texas, which had lost four straight.
Washington starter Mitchell Parker (4-6) nearly matched deGrom. The left-hander gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits over six innings. He struck out five without a walk.
Reds 4, Diamondbacks 3 (10 innings)
Christian Encarnacion-Strand doubled to center in the bottom of the 10th inning to drive in Tyler Stephenson and give host Cincinnati the win over Arizona.
The game was suspended Friday night because of rain with the score tied 3-3 after six innings. The Reds came in 0-5 in extra innings this season and had been outscored 12-0 in those losses.
Encarnacion-Strand hit a line drive that fell just in front of Alek Thomas in center. Encarnacion-Strand had three hits, two RBIs and a run. Arizona had runners on the corners with one out in the 10th off Tony Santillan (1-1), but the right-hander bounced back to strike out Ildemaro Vargas and Tim Tawa.
Reds 13, Diamondbacks 1
Christian Encarnacion-Strand hit a three-run homer in the five-run first inning and Gavin Lux blasted a grand slam in the eight-run fourth to lift Cincinnati to a win against visiting Arizona in the second game of their three-game series.
Tyler Stephenson had three hits, an RBI and scored twice and Spencer Steer had two hits, two RBIs and scored a run for the Reds. Nick Martinez (4-6) took advantage of the early run support and went six innings, allowing one run and six hits.
Arizona’s Ryne Nelson moved back into the rotation after former National League Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes was lost to upcoming Tommy John surgery. Nelson (2-2) got off to a rough start before going three-plus innings, allowing seven runs and four hits. Eugenio Suarez homered for Arizona.
Red Sox 10, Yankees 7
Trevor Story keyed an early comeback with a bases-clearing double in a five-run third inning and added a two-run single in the ninth to lift visiting Boston over New York.
Rookie Kristian Campbell hit RBI singles in the second and third off New York starter Ryan Yarbrough (3-1). Romy Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the fourth as the Red Sox rallied from a 3-1 deficit. Garrett Crochet (6-4) was not as dominant as recent outings and allowed a season-high five runs on six hits in six innings.
For New York, Austin Wells hit a three-run homer in the second and added an RBI double in the fourth. Pablo Reyes followed Wells’ double with an RBI groundout and DJ LeMahieu delivered a two-run single in the eighth off Justin Wilson.
Blue Jays 5, Twins 4
George Springer hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning to push Toronto past Minnesota. The win marks the Blue Jays’ fourth consecutive victory and the Twins’ first home series loss in nearly two months.
Twins starting pitcher Chris Paddack had a solid outing, surrendering only two runs in six innings, but Minnesota’s bullpen faltered.
Reliever Griffin Jax gave up the eighth-inning homer to Springer, and fellow bullpen arm Jhoan Duran allowed a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. RBI single to give Toronto a two-run cushion.
Cardinals 2, Dodgers 1
Pinch hitter Nolan Arenado hit a game-ending RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift St. Louis to a win over visiting Los Angeles.
With runners on first and third and nobody out in the ninth, the Dodgers deployed a five-man infield, leaving just two outfielders. Arenado lifted a long fly ball into the left field corner against righty Ben Casparius. Ryan Helsley (3-0) allowed a run in the ninth on a wild pitch for a blown save but earned the win on Arenado’s hit.
Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto went six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out nine. Los Angeles went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position, leaving them 1-for-25 with RISP in their two losses in St. Louis.
Pirates 2, Phillies 1
Starting pitcher Andrew Heaney allowed one run in six innings, silencing Philadelphia’s bats in a Pittsburgh win. Heaney’s lone slip-up was a Kyle Schwarber solo home run in the first inning.
A left calf cramp forced Heaney to exit the game early in the seventh inning, but the Pittsburgh bullpen allowed zero hits over three innings.
Phillies starter Ranger Suarez also had a solid outing with only two earned runs in seven innings, but allowed a few too many mistakes. Andrew McCutchen drove in Nick Gonzales on a single in the first inning, and Henry Davis hit a solo homer in the seventh frame to give the Pirates their two runs.
White Sox 4, Royals 1
Right-hander Adrian Houser gave up one run in six innings to lift Chicago to a win over visiting Kansas City.
Houser (2-1) allowed one run on six hits and had six strikeouts. The 32-year-old has pitched at least six innings in all four of his starts for the White Sox, including scoreless starts against the Mets and Mariners. Dan Altavilla pitched the ninth for his second career save and first since 2020.
Royals righty Michael Wacha (3-5) gave up six hits and three earned runs in six innings. Vinnie Pasquantino staked Kansas City to an early lead with a second-inning home run. The first baseman, who has reached base in 23 straight games, got on base four times with a home run, a walk and two singles.
Astros 5, Guardians 3 (10 innings)
Houston scored two runs in the 10th on a Hunter Gaddis wild pitch and an RBI single by Isaac Paredes to defeat host Cleveland.
The Astros took their second straight in the three-game series and got a home run from Yainer Diaz. Josh Hader (2-0) pitched a scoreless ninth and Bennett Sousa worked the 10th for his first save of the season and second of his career.
Houston starter Hunter Brown allowed a run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings, walking a season-high five and striking out nine. Jose Ramirez homered for the Guardians to stretch his career-high on-base streak to 33 games. Starter Gavin Williams gave up three runs on five hits in six innings.
Marlins 11, Rays 10
Jesus Sanchez led the way with a three-run home run, two RBIs and five hits in Miami’s shootout win over Tampa Bay.
The Marlins rode a six-run explosion in the fifth inning to a 10-6 lead, before their bullpen surrendered four runs over the next two frames. The Rays belted five home runs on the day, including a pair from Christopher Morel, but failed to produce runs in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings.
A pinch-hit RBI single by Heriberto Hernandez put the Marlins up 11-10 before Cade Gibson closed the game and secured his first win of the season.
Brewers 4, Padres 3
Caleb Durbin hit the first pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning for a walk-off homer to give Milwaukee a victory over visiting San Diego.
The Padres erased a 3-1 deficit with two runs in the top of the ninth off closer Trevor Megill (1-2) who had converted 12 of 13 save chances, including 11 straight. Tyler Wade reached on a fielder’s choice, Xander Bogaerts walked, and Wade and Bogaerts executed a double steal. Luis Arraez followed with a two-run double down the left field line.
David Morgan (0-1) relieved for the Padres to open the ninth and Durbin sent the first pitch 386 feet to left-center field for his second homer this season.
Mets 8, Rockies 1
New York walloped three home runs in a decisive win over Colorado. Jeff McNeil, Jared Young and Ronny Mauricio all hit homers.
Francisco Lindor helped manufacture runs with three hits and a pair of stolen bases in his first game returning to the starting lineup after suffering a broken right pinky toe. The Mets pulled away in the middle innings, totaling six runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames, to secure their 11th win in their last 14 games.
Ryan McMahon’s solo shot in the fourth inning tied the game at 1. Colorado delivered only one run on 10 hits and stranded eight runners.
Angels 8, Mariners 6
Jo Adell had three hits, including a pair of tape-measure home runs, and drove in three as Los Angeles rallied from a four-run deficit to defeat Seattle in Anaheim, Calif.
Chris Taylor homered and drove in two, Zach Neto went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run for Los Angeles, which won for the fourth time in the last five games. Connor Brogdon (1-0) picked up the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and Kenley Jensen earned his 14th save.
Cal Raleigh hit two home runs and drove in four, Randy Arozarena went 3-for-5 with a stolen base for Seattle, which lost its fifth straight. Julio Rodriguez went 2-for-2 with a stolen base and a run before departing in the third after getting struck in the right ankle with a 98.1 mph liner hit by Arozarena while trying to steal third.
